The Sunflower

Open Edition
Giclée on paper
Oh, Sol! Oh, Sol, look
upon me,
A floral reflection of
your identity . . .
I raise my leaves in
glorious awe,
My petals more yellow-
orange than harvested straw.
Feel my overwhelming joy,
exploding warmth
purest gold, no alloy!
Like you, the one I mirror
on high,
I stand tall to touch
a heavenly sky.

I must admit from the moment I saw "The Sunflower," it brought a smile to my face and filled my heart with joy. It may sound a little crazy; but I actually had conversations with it as I selected the mats and asked it which ones it liked and felt right to help it come to life for all to experience.
Let's take a closer look at the glory of Pat's wonderful open edition giclée, "The Sunflower" . . .

Inner mat detail
Once I have attached the artwork to the acid free foamcore backing, I begin to attach the mats I have chosen. I begin with the innermost mat first. In this instance I wanted a rich brown to mimic the brown center of the sunflower. Also note that I have the mat cut to pick up on the shape of the flower. By cutting the mats with both circular and square angles, I pick up the roundness if the flower head as well as the harder angles of the petals and leaves.

~ J. R. Rim
Next I add a complimentary color that picks up the colors in the petals. I love this particular golden color because it is variegated and blends darker with lighter. Also note that I have cut the gold mat so only a small amount of the brown mat is exposed. My decision was intentional because in the image itself, you only see a narrow ring of brown. Truthfully, I could have stopped with my mat colors here, but I really like the green used in the image, and I wanted to also include green.
Second mat detail
The green in the artwork contains yellow, so I selected a yellow green as my next color. Notice that I am showing more of the golden yellow than the brown bc I want to see the variegated color.

Although my mat width is only a bit more then two inches, I still wanted to break up the green. So I added another yellow green mat, same shade, to the existing green mat. See how the white bevel breaks up the wide expanse of green?

But I’m not yet finished. I created a spacer, attached to the inner yellow green mat because I wanted depth added to the piece.

Look closely. See the shadow between the yellow mat and green mat to add more depth.

The frame chosen for this piece is an authentic burl veneer that has the characteristic of gently aged wood. The rich cocoa color has an eye catching grain and contains the small knots associated with burl wood.

Sunflowers have always had a special place in my heart and to our family. They are symbolic of happiness, optimism, honesty, longevity, peace, admiration, and devotion. Many of you may recall one of my son, Stephen's first dramatic sunflower photographs that remains a favorite ~
