sometimes the past can be a good place to visit…

Had fun in the workshop the other day peeking into Collinsville’s past. I was fortunate enough to be given the task of framing a page from an original publication, Illustrated Encyclopedia and Atlas Map of Madison County, Illinois published in 1873.

The 140 year old page depicts Webster School, built in 1872. This new school replaced the old one that had been destroyed by fire. Cost of the new Webster School? $25,000.00. Look at all the architectural detail - and that tower! Sure wish that original building were with us today. According to the story, in 1879 a tornado caused damage to the roof and tower of the new structure; when the roof was repaired, the tower was not replaced.

Another fun part about framing this piece was that my customer also wanted to see the other side of the page because one of the two farm residences depicted, they only recently learned, belonged to her husband’s ancestors. How nice to be able to remove the piece from the wall, turn it over and show the back while sharing their ancestry stories with friends and family members.
